The most dramatic twist in Angels and Demons comes towards the end of the novel when the true identity of the mastermind behind the Illuminati plot is revealed. Throughout the story, the reader is led to believe that the leader of the Illuminati is the mysterious assassin, Janus. However, it is eventually revealed that the real mastermind is none other than the Camerlengo, Carlo Ventresca.
The twist comes as a shock to the reader, as Carlo has been portrayed throughout the story as a pious and devout man, dedicated to his role as the Pope’s right-hand man. However, it is eventually revealed that Carlo was not only behind the Illuminati plot but had also murdered the previous Pope, whom he saw as weak and ineffective in dealing with the issues facing the Catholic Church.
